I’ve been eyeing palm trees for months now. Maybe because I grew up in New Jersey and used to deciduous trees, or maybe because they remind me of sun and vacation. The intricacies in each tree makes me stare at them forever. I always try to take snaps on my iPhone for inspiration. But this painting was designed purely on my own imagination.
I sketched it out yesterday in my sketchbook…
I then toyed around with a few color options and then faced my canvas to make this a reality. I’ll admit, painting palm trees intimidate me. Not even a little bit, a lot. It seems like a simple easy thing to paint, right? But after observing them for so long, I know they’re anything but simple.
The finished result was beautiful, if I do say so myself. I added a Dubai skyline in the foregrounds, and I just love the subtle tonal variations at the bottom of the painting. The palm trees in the focal point appear to be dancing. And I love the jewel-like trunks that hold them up.
Yesterday I had a very unusually awesome day. After not painting for a few days, I just had to get back in the studio. Not only did I manage to paint two abstract paintings that I really enjoy, but I also received many inquiries on some artwork for sale after organizing my images into albums and saying they’re available. Amazing what a little organizing and advertising can do in a day.
This time around, I took several pictures as I worked, so I thought I’d give you guys a slideshow of what a painting in progress looks like. Hope you like!
Here’s a shot of some of what I’ve been working on this morning. I’m keen to create colorful abstract pieces with movement and vitality. With color theory, design, and painting knowledge swirling in my head, each little piece can be quite the time consumer. But they are truly a joy for me to create.
I’m glad I’ve been able to find joy and childlike curiosity in my work after being stuck in classical oil painting renderings for far too long. It’s nice to loosen up and abstract art will take you right out of any comfort zone you have!
